Our lab takes an integrative approach to ecological questions by drawing on techniques and theory from evolutionary physiology, behavioural ecology, and conservation biology.
The Love Lab broadly examines the role of phenotypic variation in quality-mediated physiological traits and their costs and benefits. We focus on how and why inter-individual variation in physiological traits affects fitness.
An important aspect of our research is concerned with how human-induced changes in the environment, including climate change and habitat alteration, affects individual fitness and population health.
We primarily study Arctic and temperate avian systems, but we also work collaboratively in aquatic systems.
We use diverse methods including hormone and other physiological assays, geolocator and tracking technology, isotopes, and mark-recapture techniques.

The Love Lab works on a variety of avian systems including songbirds, sea ducks, and seabirds in Arctic and temperate ecosystems in Canada. By studying a diversity of systems, we can best investigate broad ecological, evolutionary, and applied questions.
